Portsmouth switches to mixed-glass bring banks

    26 February 2010

PORTSMOUTH City Council is changing from three-colour to mixed-glass bring banks in an effort to raise the city's glass recycling rate.

The switch is intended to make it easier for Portsmouth citizens residents to recycle their glass. It is believed that this is the first such move by a local authority.

Portsmouth council has a number of glass banks scattered throughout the city. At each site there are three banks so that people can separate the glass into clear, green and brown.

The council's cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Eleanor Scott, said: "Collecting all colours of glass at any of our bottle banks means they are quicker and easier to use, and fill to their full capacity. We plan to make more collections from local recycling points and put lots more bottle banks around the city."

The mixed-glass banks will replace the existing banks at 48 locations around the city.

Portsmouth City Council also plans to set up a further 10 mixed-glass banks across the city.

In 2006, Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council switched to mixed-glass banks so as to reduce the number of glass banks that it operated.

Separating glass, it is claimed, means that the proportion sent for remelting and manufacture into new bottles is greater. At present, clear and brown glass, when separated, gains a price that is almost twice that of mixed glass. Green glass, on the other hand, is common and thus is valued not much more than mixed glass.
