Liverpool Liverbird flies the flag for recycling
1 March 2010
LIVERPOOL has a new attraction – the Liverpool Liverbird, a bird sculpture that is made entirely from recycled rubbish.
The sculpture is attracting much attention, which pleases the artists, since they hoped it would raise awareness about the need to raise the rate of recycling across the UK.
The work is on display at the information centre at the Liverpool One shopping centre.
Liverpool councillor Berni Turner said the huge increase in recycling in the city over during the last few years has significantly reduced the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
Both businesses and residents have been recycling more, according to Liverpool council figures. Recycling rates over the past five years have risen from 15,000 tonnes of waste recycled each year to 49,000 tonnes.
Laura Underwood of Recycle Now said that, although recycling had increased, if everyone recycled at maximum capacity the amount of material sent to landfill would be greatly reduced.
