London mayor welcomes great response to recycling appeal

LONDON Mayor Boris Johnson, who chairs the London Waste and Recycling Board, has welcomed the huge response to the board's call for innovative ideas to increase recycling and reduce the amount sent to landfill.

The board reported that 142 proposals or ‘expressions of interest’ had been submitted asking for its support. Many involved innovative ideas with environmentally friendly solutions and using a wide range of technologies.

They include proposals to divert London's waste from landfill to recycling, gasification, anaerobic digestion and composting.

The proposals help the board to understand the range of opportunities available. It can now more easily analyse how it can spend its money and offer its expertise most effectively.

Its aim is to raise recycling rates and help London to deal with its waste in a more eco-friendly way. The proposals have revealed the potential in London and in the waste industry to implement new ways to manage a large portion of London's waste – 21 million tonnes a year.

The board lacks the finite funds to implement all proposals but could deal with around 9 million tonnes of waste.

The board has agreed the framework to decide which proposals will benefit from part of the £84 million funding it has available.

Those who submitted proposals that meet the criteria will now be invited to develop more detailed business cases.

The board has ring-fenced £2 million for smaller-value projects, including community-led schemes.
