Sutton recycling centre plan angers Beddington residents
12 December 2008
SUTTON Council plans to establish a new recycling centre within two hundred metres of a primary school are being fought by residents.
It is proposed that materials from roadworks will be recycled site at the Beddington site. Residents are concerned about possible effects on people’s health and also fear the environmental impact of heavy lorries that will use the site.
A 450-signature petition was handed in to Sutton Council as the deadline for the end of public consultation – 12th December – approached.
Wandle Bank resident Mike Dunne said: “The plans show there will be a bitumen tanker on site, which is close to residential homes and Beddington Park Primary School. We believe the bitumen will be heated, releasing carcinogenic particles.”
However, a spokesman for HS Works Ltd, which made the proposals, insisted that bitumen would not be heated at the site.
“Any pollution arising from the scheme that has the potential to affect air, land, or water quality has been carefully and scientifically considered by independent environmental experts,” he said. The conclusions drawn showed that “effects on health and the environment would be negligible”.
