Kent fly-tipping scourge prompts new campaign

    6 June 2000

KENT, known as ‘the Garden of England’, has become increasingly blighted by fly-tipping over the last decade.

However, three bodies are collaborating to tackle the problem. They are the University of Greenwich’s Centre for Contaminated Land Remediation, Robert Brett and Sons Ltd and the Thomas Aveling School in Rochester.

They plan to reduce the level of fly-tipping by developing short training courses in waste management and the use of sustainable resources. The courses are aimed at educating the next generation.

The initiative, called BUGSI – Brett and University of Greenwich Schools Initiative – is funded by landfill tax credits provided by the Brett Group.

The training courses and teacher support packs are being developed by University of Greenwich graduate Angela Holder and Anne Ryback from the Thomas Aveling School.

The courses will place an emphasis on studying environmental issues in the south-east. They will include school visits to Brett Waste Management and Brett Aggregates landfill and extraction sites.

Dr Paula Carey of the University of Greenwich said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to bring real environmental issues into the classroom. With this initiative we are giving the next generation of scientists, planners and engineers – and potential future fly-tippers – their first experience of the importance of proper waste management."
