Aberdeenshire to agree £200m waste deal with French firm
3 March 2010
ABERDEENSHIRE Council is expected to agree a deal this week for the treatment and disposal of all its household and business waste.
The French company Sita UK is thought likely to win the contract, which is said to be worth between £100 million and £200 million, according to The Press and Journal newspaper.
It operates landfills across the UK and the council hopes it can help it to meet strict EU targets on municipal waste. Local authorities are to be penalised if they exceed their landfill allowance, set by the Scottish government as part of a Brussels directive.
Sita is one of the biggest waste-management firms in the world. It runs 32 landfills in Scotland, including at Stoneyhill in Buchan. It recently applied for planning permission to treat and store radioactive waste from the North Sea at Stoneyhill.
The company also operates a recycling centre in Scotland, at East Tullos Industrial Park in Aberdeen.
The contract, which was put to tender in November, is to last for at least 15 years. Sita would treat and dispose of all residential and business waste that the council collects from recycling centres and kerbsides.
Sita UK has its headquarters in Huddersfield.
