St Helens’ new plant to recycle electric waste
3 March 2010
A NEW £9 million recycling facility in St Helens on Merseyside is to deal with electrical waste for Viridor, the recycling and waste-management company.
The new centre will receive electrical equipment – or e-waste – from all over the UK, including items collected from households, businesses, hospitals and schools. The items that can be processed include TVs, refrigerators and computers.
The St Helens plant, which was developed by German technology company MeWa, is located on the site of the Viridor plant that was damaged by fire in July 2008.
At full capacity, the plant can process up to 40,000 metric tonnes, or more than six tonnes in one hour. The electrical parts are separated from any materials that can be reused or recycled such as metal and glass.
Viridor director Mike Hellings said advances in technology had allowed the firm to upgrade its equipment, which means less waste goes to landfill.
More parts from electrical equipment could now be recycled than previously, he added.
