Norwich Castle re-built out of recyclable rubbish

NORWICH Castle has been re-built, using drink cans and phone books.

The Normans used solid French stone to build the castle, but they wanted it to serve a good defensive purpose. The new castle, however, has been built to celebrate Norwich’s progress in recycling waste in recent years.

The miniature version of the famous castle is made of materials that can be recycled by the city’s householders.

Norwich’s recycling rate has doubled in two years. IN 2009, citizens cut their waste by almost 10pc. The city is thus one of the top 10 areas in the UK for sending less waste to landfill.



The sculpture was commissioned by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and created by artist Stuart Murdoch.



It is designed to showcase the variety of materials that can be recycled, including tins and cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, toothpaste boxes, corrugated card and phone books.

The city council’s executive member for residents and customer care, Julie Brociek-Coulton, said: “This is such a great way to say thanks to the people of Norwich for their hard work, and to inspire them to carry on, or even do a little more.



“We find that glass and plastic bottles are the things that get forgotten about when people are sorting their recycling, so have a double check on what goes in which bin before you throw it away.”



Laura Underwood, from Recycle Now, a recycling initiative of WRAP, said: “In this country we are getting better at recycling. The amount of waste we send to landfill is constantly falling and nearly everyone is recycling at least one material.”
