Middleton youth clean up rubbish
25 February 2010
MIDLETON, Rochdale young people teamed up to clean land surrounding a social centre.
Eleven teenagers filled 15 bin bags with rubbish during a litter pick around Spring Vale Social Centre.
The team consisted of youths from the Middleton Youth Inclusion Project (YIP), Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale, and the Youth Offending Team.
They are to return to the area in the near future to clear up litter in alleyways around Kenyon Lane.
Ian Duffy, of Rochdale Youth Offending Team, said: "They've made a big difference to the area around Spring Vale Social Centre. Working as a team, the young people have cleared the car park, tackled the land along William Street and removed litter from the trees behind the centre."
Mark Poscha, scheme leader at Groundwork, said: "It's a good example of young people being seen in a positive light. Often all you hear is negative opinions of youngsters so it's nice to be helping them do something good."
Middleton Youth Inclusion Project is a prevention service which aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and prevent youngsters from ending up in the youth justice system.
