Thanet Clean Sweep brushes away the rubbish

THANET Council’s latest Operation Clean Sweep in Birchington and Westgate discovered a possible fire risk and cleanliness issues in restaurants.

The operation, led by Thanet Council, was assisged by Kent Police, the UK Border Agency and Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Last week teams inspected properties in the two areas over two days.

A property with multiple occupants on Station Road, Birchington was closed by the fire service because the means of escape were considered inadequate.

A restaurant in Westgate was instructed to clean up after dirty washing was found in the area where food is prepared.

Two food premises, in Birchington and in Westgate, were not regulated by the council’s food-safety team, while a store in Westgate disposed of nine items of food because they had been stacked above the freezer line.

In checks to ensure businesses had trade waste licences only three out of 15 properties checked on Canterbury Road, Westbrook, had a licence.

The Pipeline volunteer group cleared rubbish that had been dumped behind shops on Canterbury Road and also waste that had been fly-tipped at Linksfield Road, Westgate.

Meanwhile, council officers are investigating rubbish found at The Square, Birchington.

Thanet Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, Shirley Tomlinson, said: “The latest Clean Sweep received a great response from everyone our officers spoke to in Birchington and Westgate.”
