Norfolk anti-litter volunteers offered cash reward

VOLUNTEERS who help to keep mid-Norfolk's countryside clean are to be offered a cash reward.



The offer has arisen because of concern that some of the most picturesque areas in the region are blighted by litter and rubbish.

Now the Norfolk wing of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has announced a fund of grants – from Keep Britain Tidy – that will reward community litter wardens.

The offer coincides with plans by Breckland Council for a major community clean-up.
In what is being called the ‘Breckland Blitz’, families will clear up litter in mid-Norfolk for a week, starting on March 1.



Led by the travel writer Bill Bryson, who lives in Norfolk, the CPRE is calling on residents associations, parish councils and other community groups to nominate a person to give their area ‘a clean sweep’. 



CPRE Norfolk's anti-litter group chairman, Paul Wiley, said: “Towns and villages are kept clean. It's the roads in between that are the problem. You see miles and miles of crisp packets, drinks bottles, beer cans and bits of plastic. And it's getting more prevalent throughout the county.”



Nominated litter wardens will be provided with specialist gear, including clothes, gloves and pickers. They will also be offered an honorarium of £100 a year for three years.

Mr Wiley said: “It's a reward, not a salary – an acknowledgement of the contribution to the community.”
