Plymouth sculpture promotes recycling – and World Cup bid

    2 March 2010

A SCULPTURE of a child with a football made from a variety of materials will be unveiled in Plymouth at the same time as new figures showing that the recycling rate in the south-west has risen by 28 per cent since 1999.

The sculpture is also intended to support the city’s campagin to be a World Cup host, if England win its bid. A Plymouth Argyle spokesman said: "As befits the country’s only true Green football team, we thoroughly support the message that recycling now is vital for Plymouth’s future. We hope to reveal a further exciting Green initiative in the coming days.”

The sculpture will be unveiled by Plymouth Council’s cabinet member for street scene, waste and sustainability, Cllr Michael Leaves.

Research by Recycle Now reveals that in the south-west 98pc of people recycle at least one item and only 2pc think recycling is a waste of time.

A total of 16pc take unwanted goods to charity shops, while 10pc sell their items online.

Councillor Leaves said: “We are getting better at recycling. But we carried out a survey last year which shows that there is still confusion about what can be recycled. The most striking observation we found was the amount of ‘wrong’ plastic put in the recycling.

“We can take hard plastics such as clean plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, but cannot take the soft plastics such as film, crisp packets, plastic bags, cellophane wrapping or expanded polystyrene.”

The recycling collections in Plymouth can not take glass, milk and juice cartons (tetra paks), sweet wrappers, clothes and shoes, nappies and shredded paper.
