London residents raise their recycling rate

LONDON’s household recycling rate has risen from 25pc to 29pc in just one year, according to the Environment Agency. And the average amount of water that people use has fallen.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “To improve our quality of life, care for our planet and save money, we can all take steps to save energy and adapt our homes and workplaces.

"I am cheered to see from the Environment Agency’s report that we are already making headway in doing this.”

Environment Agency regional strategy manager Clive Coley said: “Although London’s carbon footprint is lower than the UK footprint, climate change is a challenge we cannot afford to ignore as six out of the top 20 hottest years on record occurred since 2000.

“This report shows that people need to continue to make strides to help manage and protect the capital’s vital resources.”

The annual State of the Environment for London is aimed at promoting sustainable development, improving London’s environment and informing policymakers, developers and the public in general.
