Surrey Heath residents show they’re champion recyclers
25 September 2009
SURREY Heath has achieved a big increase in recycling in recent weeks as residents took advantage of the London borough's new waste and recycling collections.
In the first two weeks of the scheme, which began on 7th September, the volume of dry recyclable materials collected was 391 tonnes. This is an increase of more than 250 tonnes over the same two weeks in 2008.
Under the new scheme, householders can put a broader range of materials out for recycling, including tins, glass bottles and jars, cartons, plastic tubs and trays, cardboard and paper.
They also have new food-waste containers in which to deposit fruit, vegetable peelings and other food waste. The contents will be turned into compost instead of going to landfill.
One of the main sources of the greenhouse gas methane is decomposing organic waste in landfill. Methane is 21 times more harmful to the world's atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
During the first two weeks of collections in Surrey Heath, more than 92 tonnes of food waste were diverted from landfill.
The council’s portfolio holder for community, Cllr Vivienne Chapman, said: "We are extremely pleased with this huge increase in recycling and I would like to thank residents for supporting the new scheme and their efforts in sorting materials for recycling.
“It will all go towards boosting the borough's recycling achievements and help reduce Surrey Heath's impact on the environment.”
