Liverpool City Council Launch War on Disposable Nappies
One of the biggest challenges that Liverpool City Council faces is the sheer volume of so called disposable nappies that are thrown away in household waste every week. The term “disposable” is often confused by mums and dads with recycling; but of course, disposable nappies cannot be recycled and they end up in landfill sites. In Liverpool alone, over 21.5 million nappies are thrown away each year! The number is staggering, but the city authority is determined to try and change mum’s and dad’s habits, to lessen the amount of disposables that are dumped.
They are taking a two pronged attack. The first method is to empower parents to make the right ecological choice, by giving them more information about the impact that throwing away disposable nappies has on the environment. It can take throw-away nappies as long as 500 years to degrade in landfill sites, and one of the harmful things that happens in the process is that methane gas is created. The methane gas that is released has the unfortunate characteristic to contribute toward global warming, and as there is a growing tide of anger and outcry about our atmosphere steadily becoming warmer, it is hoped that parents will feel sufficiently ashamed, and that this feeling will deter them from continuing to use disposables.
Instead of using disposable nappies, the city council are attempting to shift parent opinion away from the convenience factor, by emphasising that this is convenience, but at what cost to the rest of the population? They are strongly recommending the use of reusable nappies instead. Since the old days of reusable Terry nappies that required skilful folding and pinning, and then boiling to get them clean, the new style reusables are so much more user friendly. Today’s reusable nappies are much less bulky than their old Terry predecessors, are well shaped, and they can be easily machine washed.
But it’s not just information that Liverpool City Council are offering, they are also offering some practical help too. Firstly, if you decide to change over to using reusable nappies, and you wash them at your own home, you can claim £50 back from the council, and this is in top of the savings that will be made by stopping buying dozens of new disposables, and reusing new reusables instead.
But for those parents who do not want the hassle of cleaning the nappies themselves, Liverpool City Council is underwriting a 1 month free trail with Cotton Tails Laundry Services, or Happy Bums Laundry Service.
For more information about any of these incentive schemes, householders can check in at the website www.liverpool.gov.uk. It is hoped that other local authorities will take a page from Liverpool City Council’s book, and introduce their own incentive schemes. The saving in landfill usage on a national scale would have a significant impact on the environment, helping to minimise pollution, as well as helping to slow global warning.
