Merton boosts on-the-go recycling

MERTON Council is to place recycling bins at 12 transport hubs and five public parks in a drive to cut down on the 2,000 tonnes of waste from street cleaning that goes to landfill each year.

The council in the London borough yesterday announced plans to install over 20 bins near train, tram and tube stations. It is intended that these will be used to dump mainly newspapers and magazines, but also cans, cartons, plastic bottles and glass.

It will also install recycling bins to collect the same items at five parks across the borough. Cannizaro Park is to be included once building works there are completed.

Collections from the bins will be made three times weekly – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. They are planned to start on September 19.

At present, bins are in place, for paper recycling alone, outside Wimbledon Station and Colliers Wood and Wimbledon Park underground stations. The new service will considerably improve the council's on-the-go recycling.

Earlier this year, the London Assembly urged London Mayor Boris Johnson to introduce more on-the-go recycling points across London.

Merton Council cabinet member for environment and leisure services, Cllr David Simpson, said: "People are very good at recycling when they are in their own homes but in the past it has been more difficult for them to recycle plastic bottles or empty cans while they are out and about in the borough.

"We want to make recycling easier for people and turn it into part of everyday life. I hope that having lots of recycling bins near local stations and in our parks will encourage people to recycle their rubbish wherever they are."
