Redbridge school wins Yellow Pages recycling award

REDBRIDGE schools have been competing for weeks in the Redbridge Yellow Woods Challenge – a fun and educational environmental initiative run by the Yellow Pages Directory Recycling Scheme and the Woodland Trust, working with Redbridge Council.

The champions are the Hyleford Leavers Unit, which has won £300 and been named the Gold Oak winner.

Over the last eight weeks, 16 schools in the London borough have been competing in the competition, in which schoolchildren collect old Yellow Pages directories (featuring sandcastles on the front cover) for recycling into animal bedding.



The schools collected a total of 3,514 old directories.

Hyleford Leavers Unit collected 13 old directories per pupil. Hyleford School came second, and receives £200 and a Silver Birch certificate, while Snaresbrook Primary School came third, and receives £100 and a Bronze Beech certificate.

Yellow Pages will dedicate a tree in a Woodland Trust wood to Snaresbrook Primary School for collecting the most directories in total. 



All the schools from the Redbridge Challenge will be entered into the Yellow Woods Challenge UK Finals in October 2004. They will be competing with up to 1,200 schools nationwide for cash prizes of up to £2,000.

For every pound that Yellow Pages gives to schools in prize money, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust to help protect native woodland.



The top six schools will receive, as well as the cash prizes, a Woodland Trust ‘Wild about Woods’ pack, to teach children about ancient woodland.

The participating schools will also be given a certificate featuring Kirk, the Challenge campaign mascot. 



All the schools are also given educational materials providing enjoyable environmental activities that also teach children about recycling and woodland conservation.



Gail Kenlin, Redbridge Council recycling liaison officer, said: “The Yellow Woods Challenge has been a huge success in Redbridge. Schools have had great fun recycling old directories and learning about the environment and woodland. It has also been a great opportunity for the council to raise the profile of recycling locally.”
