Lambeth’s new recycling scheme has double benefits

LAMBETH Council has come up with a new way to protect the environment and simultaneously avoid paying fines in the future – by disposing properly of food waste.

In 2008, Lambeth surpassed its waste recycling goal of 25pc, but the council wants to take precautionary measures to avoid penalties for sending excessive waste to landfill in the future.

Lambeth Council’s Cabinet member for Environment, Cllr Sally Prentice, said: "Organic waste is a significant source of greenhouse gas when it is sent to landfill, so it's important we take steps to reduce the amount of food we throw away and compost it instead.

“We need to significantly cut down on the amount of waste we send to landfill sites to avoid financial penalties in the next few years."

Lambeth Council will distribute food caddies, caddy liners and a lockable outside food-waste bin to around 80,000 homes so that residents can dispose of food waste such as vegetable peelings, tea bags, fruit, meat, fish bones, egg shells and scrapings. The food waste will be collected weekly.
