Havering recycling trial proves a whopping success

    27 April 2009

HAVERING Council's recycling collection trial in the London borough has proved hugely successful. More than four times the usual level of orange sacks and cardboard was collected.

The trial was launched in November 2008. It has made it easier for around 25,000 residents in parts of Cranham, Elm Park, Hornchurch, Rainham and Upminster to recycle waste.

In the scheme, orange sacks, as well as cardboard, and rubbish sacks have been collected separately by different vehicles on the same day each week.

More than 1,600 tonnes of orange sacks and cardboard were collected in the first 19 weeks of the trial. The average total of 90 tonnes per week compares with an average of 20 tonnes in the same area before the trial began.

Residents were also able to recycle garden waste if they left it in pre-paid green sacks, as well as textiles.

Because of its success, the trial will not end this month, as it was scheduled to do, but will continue in a modified form.

Black bags and orange sacks will still be collected in separate vehicles on the same day each week. However, pre-paid green sacks, instead of being collected for recycling on alternate weeks, will be collected weekly as part of the general collection.

Textiles will no longer be collected. Residents can take these to one of the recycling banks in the borough.

Cabinet member for Streetcare, Cllr Barry Tebbutt, said: "I'd like to thank residents for giving this trial their support and for making it a success — collecting four and a half times the amount recycled is a huge achievement."
