Gloucestershire Composters

Once upon a time, the so called 3 R’s represented: Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic; but in today’s conservation conscious world, they are now becoming ues to represent: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle; a theme being thoroughly endorsed and promoted by some of the country’s leading local authorities, and the householders and residents of Gloucestershire are luckier than they know to be living in a county administered to by one such proactive local authority, the Gloucestershire County Council.

A quick look at their website will show you just how positive these guys really are. The website of which we speak can be found at www.recycleforgloucestershire.com and is a shining example to other local authorities, of just how to inform and empower a county’s residents, to improve recycling statistics, by reducing the amount of household waste that they put out for collection, through careful shopping and a more diligent “can I re-use it” mentality.

Take for example the team of 19 master composters (ordinary residents with a passion for recycling) that has spontaneously risen and joined with the County Council to spread the good word.

The team is promoting the advantages of composting, through a series of composting road shows; by visiting schools to increase children’s awareness; through presentations and talks they host across the county; by writing articles for the local newspapers, and by penning newsletters for distribution to various websites and other interested parties.

The original team of 19 volunteers each received two full days training in the theory and practice of composting, at “Garden Organic”, the country’s top organic growing charity. Michael Ellard, one of the nineteen, voiced his opinion of just how good the course was, and how much both he and the other 18 volunteers learnt. The 19 all anticipate a barrage of questions, and requests for more information on composting, from the general public when they participate in the council run road shows, and they fully appreciate the grounding they have been given on their 2 day course, which will undoubtedly stand them in good stead.

It is proposed that the Master Composters will each carry out a minimum of 30 hours of voluntary work, after which, a graduation ceremony is planned in about 12 months times. Councilor Stan Waddington has praised all of the 19 for their belief and dedication to the recycling cause, and for giving up their own personal leisure time to promote the scheme.

Composting is a superb way of being able to process household waste naturally at its very source; the household itself. Not only is it a great way of reducing the amount of waste that is put out for collection, and ends up invariably in precious limited landfill resources, but it also reuses the waste to produce something truly useful, namely compost for the garden.
