Bromley suffers five cases of asbestos fly-tipping
29 August 2003
THERE have been five incidents of asbestos being dumped in Bromley recently.
According to Bromley Council, 10 to 12 fly-tipping incidents involving asbestos occur each year. The amounts dumped tend to be quite small. The recent five incidents followed a quiet period.
Bromley Council says that the incidents normally involve the dumping of asbestos cement sheeting – corrugated sheeting used for roofs or walls in factories and garages.
Asbestos fly-tippers tend to dump at sites used to get rid of other waste.
To combat dumping of rubbish in general, Bromley Council has introduced an envirocrime reward scheme for information on fly-tippers. It was had one successful conviction (not involving asbestos) and expects a couple more to follow shortly.
If the rate of asbestos fly-tipping incidents in Bromley is typical of the greater London area, the total number would be well over 300 every year.
In London, until 1996, the London Waste Regulatory Authority (LWRA) mainly had control over waste disposal, including fly-tipping. Since the LWRA was absorbed into the Environment Agency, no single body is responsible.
Fly-tipping incidents are currently dealt with at the borough level.
