Croydon Council urged to tackle fly-tipping epidemic

CROYDON Council has been asked to take action over a fly-tipping "epidemic" that is spreading across Thornton Heath.

Laurence Gough, a 671-year-old with a disability, made the request after more than 50 tyres were dumped near his home on Bensham Manor Road.

He said he felt "utterly frustrated" that his neighbourhood was being turned into a dumping ground.

Neighbours reported seeing the tyres being thrown from a large white van with a roof-rack.

Mr Gough said it was the latest in a series of fly-tipping incidents which had blighted the local community.

Residents will have to pay themselves to have the tyres removed because they were dumped on private land.

Mr Gough called for the police and Croydon Council to take action to catch the culprits. "It's a hideous eyesore and it's extremely frustrating," he said. "Fly-tipping has particularly increased over the last few weeks. It's getting to be an epidemic.

"I phoned the police but they won't investigate it because they said it's not a crime. I phoned the council too but because it's on private land they won't remove them. We're completely stuck.

"We would have to pay for somebody to come and collect them but it would cost a fortune."

The council said its officers were carrying out enforcement work in an attempt to crack down on fly-tippers. A spokesman said: "Those people who illegally dump their waste on private land cause huge problems for local people.

"We know that it can sometimes cost them hundreds of pounds to have this cleared.”
