City of London ‘big’ and ‘nasty’ fly-tipping cases declines

    15 January 2010

INCIDENTS of ‘big’ and ‘nasty’ fly-tipping recorded in the City of London have increased since 2005/06 and 2007/08, but they declined in 2008/09.

‘Big’ incidents are those involving tipper-lorry-load size or larger, while ‘nasty’ incidents involve oil, fuel or chemical drums.

The number of ‘nasty’ incidents has declined recently from 10 to two.

Meanwhile, the City of London has one of the highest recycling and composting rates in London, ranking sixth out of the 33 boroughs.

The recycling rate is 33.02pc, ranking first, while the composting rate is 0.38pc, ranking 31st.

The household recycling and composting rate in the City of London has risen dramatically since 2000/01. The rate of composting has remained very low due to the lack of private gardens – most residential properties in the City are flats.

The volume of hazardous waste arising in the City of London was 3,106, almost double the 1,668 tonnes recorded in 2006.

The primary method of dealing with waste was landfill (64pc), with treatment used for 21pc.

Out of the 3,106 tonnes arising in the City of London, only 6pc was disposed of within London. The primary method of ‘waste fate’ was waste transfer. The remaining hazardous waste was diverted to other regions for disposal.

The main recipient was the South-East of England, which received 57pc of the hazardous waste arising in the City. The East of England was also a large recipient.
