Greenwich fly-tipping blamed on bulky rubbish charge
18 November 2009
GREENWICH residents have reported a number of fly-tipping incidents across the borough, according to
Greenwich Conservatives who have promised to scrap “bulky household waste” charges if elected in 2010.
Currently householders pay £12 to have unwanted furniture and domestic appliances removed. The service used to be free but, since Labour introduced the charge, many residents have either dumped these items in their front gardens or resorted to illegal fly-tipping.
However, Neighbourhood Services cabinet member Maureen O’Mara has insisted that Greenwich Council’s £12 charge for collecting bulky household rubbish is a “very good deal”.
The fee was introduced for non-council tenants two years ago.
Liberal Democrat Cllr Paul Webbewood said he thought it was leading to a rise in fly-tipping.
Last month, Labour councillor Janet Gillman told a residents group in Charlton that she would press for the policy to be reviewed.
But Cllr O’Mara said residents could get rid of up to three items for their money.
“Bexley Council charges £25 for the same service,” she added.
