Brent chosen as a Zero Waste Place

THE London Borough of Brent is one of six areas that has been named as England’s first ‘Zero Waste Places’ by Environment Minister Jane Kennedy.

The aim is that the Zero Waste Places will reduce as far as possible the environmental impact of waste – whether at home, at work or in the community.

Brent is to develop 20 Green Zones across the borough by September 2009.

This will require establishing Green Teams, made up of residents, and developing a GIS-based map of the borough which will feature green ‘threads’ growing through the borough in order to track the progress of the initiative.

Another of the zero-waste areas, the London Borough of Lewisham, will run an Eco Street initiative. About 100 properties will be targeted to cut waste, backed by a range of measures including specialist advice and support.

The other places selected to implement zero-waste plans are:
• Shenley Church End in Milton Keynes
• Kings Lynn in Norfolk
• Peterborough
• The West Midlands – which is to create a Zero Waste Region

Ms Kennedy said: “Across England, we are seeing communities come together with innovative ideas and a shared determination to tackle waste locally.

“These six zero-waste places will test what can be done to make it easier for people and businesses to change the way they view and deal with waste.”

The Zero Waste Places were selected to demonstrate innovative and replicable initiatives that facilitate waste prevention in households, businesses and schools.

The scheme is being managed on behalf of Defra by the BREW Centre for Local Authorities.
