Harrow fines multimillion housing boss for fly-tipping

WHEN Harrow Council discovered a huge pile of rubbish dumped behind residents' homes, it little suspected who was responsible.

Harrow Council's Envirocrime team had got calls about a “mountain” of household rubbish tipped behind garages in Marsh Road, Pinner on September 1.

The items included fridge freezers, mattresses, clothes, carpets and personal belongings.

The person behind the fly-tipping case was then discovered to be a landlord who controls a multi-million-pound housing empire.

He had evicted a family and had their belongings dumped on open land seven miles away.

Subramaniam Sathiyavadivelu (53), Wembley, was ordered to pay £14,675 after pleading guilty on behalf of Sathy Estates Ltd, which has London offices in Harrow, Harlesden and Stanmore.

Harrow Magistrates' Court was told on June 10 that the business lets more than 600 homes across north-west London and has an annual turnover of up to £7 million,.

The defendant admitted two charges under the Environmental Protection Act. He was fined £9,000 for allowing waste to be dumped on land, and £2,500 for failing to produce waste transfer notes. These are official documents showing how waste was disposed of.

His company had evicted a family of seven from a house in Edgware in August last year. Staff gave the Somali family just 20 minutes to leave. A new tenant had already signed the lease.

The family, who moved in with relatives, left with a carload of possessions. When they returned later, they found that the lettings company had used a rogue contractor to get rid of everything that remained in the house.

The court also ordered the defendant to pay £3,000 costs and a £15 victim's surcharge.
