Barking and Dagenham residents with ‘rubbish gardens’ are warned
29 October 2009
BARKING and Dagenham Council has warned householders who let their gardens turn into rubbish tips that they could be named and shamed.
On Thursday, council chiefs launched a new patrol to clean up the borough's main eyesores, along a long stretch of east Dagenham between Heathway and the Docks.
The council warned that residents who failed to clean up their gardens could be taken to court and fined, and that details could be passed on to the media and published online.
In July, private landlord Bradmoss Ltd was ordered to pay £12,000 for allowing rotting food, used nappies and furniture to accumulate in Berengers Place, Dagenham, for more than six months.
Council chiefs said they had "numerous powers" to prosecute fly-tippers, including the Environmental Protection Act, Town and Country Planning Act and the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act.
Those who dump trade waste face unlimited fines and even a spell in prison, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Council leader Cllr Liam Smith said: "There is a small minority who spoil the look of our streets by treating their front gardens like rubbish tips or allowing hedges and bushes to grow to jungle proportions.”
