Barnet fly-tipping clean-up costs taxpayers £246,000 in year

BARNET Council has had to clean up a lot of waste dumped by fly-tippers in the borough over the past year – and the total cost is nearly £250,000.

The council spent £245,887 in the 2006/07 financial year in order to deal with the rubbish arising from 4,059 cases of fly-tipping.

This is a little less than what it spent in 2005/06 – £263,076 – on dealing with 4,843 cases.

Meanwhile, Barney Council recently carried out a seven-hour operation to catch lorry drivers carrying unregistered rubbish.

At Brunswick Industrial Park, Brunswick Park, staff from the council's community protection group were joined by officers from the Environment Agency, anti-fraud teams and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

They stopped and searched suspicious vehicles, and asked drivers to provide paperwork showing that they were registered as waste carriers.

Two out of nine of those stopped were not registered, while another lacked a heavy-goods vehicle licence. Three other vehicles were found to be unroadworthy or overweight.

Three drivers were given fixed penalty notices: one was carrying an insecure load, the second was driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition, and the third had no road tax.

Councillor Brian Coleman, cabinet member for community safety and engagement, said: "Working in partnership is key to tackling crime in all its forms. Unregistered waste carriers can often be linked to more serious problems, such as fly-tipping.

“Getting hazardous and unlicensed vehicles off the road is vitally important as they can cause accidents and may be involved in other types of crime."
