Wandsworth rubbish clean-up bill is London’s highest – at £3.8m

WANDSWORTH had to pay nearly £3.8 million to clean up fly-tipped rubbish in 2006/07 – the biggest bill paid by any London local authority.

A total of 588,432 incidents of fly-tipping had to be dealt with and the total cost for London as a whole was £19,785,484. After Wandsworth, the largest bills paid by other local authorities were:

• Kensington and Chelsea – £2.5 million
• Haringey – almost £2 million
• Lewisham – £1 million +
• Newham – £1 million +
• Brent – £1 million +

The cost of dealing with dumped rubbish in London has risen by more than £3 million.

However, the number of prosecutions fell from 308 to 293, provoking calls for town halls and magistrates courts to take tougher action.

Waste minister Joan Ruddock said: "Despite some good progress in enforcement and reporting, there is far too much fly-tipping blighting our streets and countryside. It's not acceptable and more needs to be done to tackle it.

“Several London councils are driving down fly-tipping through targeted, concerted action. I want more councils to follow their lead."

Shadow communities secretary Eric Pickles said: "Fly-tipping has become rife and is creating a blot on our landscape. This is an environmental disaster of the Government's making, putting public health at risk."
