Kensington and Chelsea spends £2.5m on fly-tipping clean-up

KENSINGTON and Chelsea spent £2.5 million to clear up fly-tipped rubbish in 2006/07.

The London local authority had to deal with 107,816 cases of fly-tipping. This was the second-highest number recorded by any of the capital’s council areas – Wandsworth suffered 158,076 incidents.

Few people are being prosecuted, however. In the whole of London, there were just 293 prosecutions in 2006/07, and while incidents of fly-tipping are increasing, the number of prosecutions is falling.

Some large companies have been found guilty of not disposing of rubbish correctly. HSBC was fined £500 recently for dumping cardboard boxes and rubbish bags outside its North Kensington branch.

In England and Wales as a whole, fly-tippers dump an estimated 1,000 piles of rubbish a day and the clean-up costs council taxpayers around £40 million a year.

On average, local authorities spend almost £114,000 a year for cleaning up rubbish.

According to Mirror.co.uk, 370,000 cases of fly-tipping were reported by the 182 councils surveyed across England and Wales, but fewer than 5,000 offenders were fined.

Lib Dem local government spokeswoman Julia Goldsworthy called on councils to get tough. “The cost of clearing up adds to local taxes at a time when other services are being cut back,” she said.
