Birmingham plant means nappies won’t go to waste
25 August 2009
PLASTIC from the first disposable nappies to be recycled in the UK is to be transformed into DIY and building products.
A new £12 million Knowaste plant is set to open at Tyseley in spring 2010. Its agreement with SmallPlanet Building Products means the plastic recovered from recycled disposable nappies and incontinence products will be turned into plastic cladding, roof tiles and other products that will be sold both to DIY stores and to the construction industry.
The new plant, on the Atlas industrial estate, will recycle 36,000 tonnes of disposable nappies and incontinence products yearly. If these were sent to landfill, they would take hundreds of years to decompose.
SmallPlanet Building Products general manager Bill Knoupe told the Birmingham Post: “The construction industry is a significant user of material resources and energy, consuming 420 million tonnes of construction products in the UK every year.
“There is a real opportunity to open up a new market in construction, offering sustainable products that come with clear benefits for the building and housing sector, which are increasingly being asked to improve sustainability credentials.”
The construction companies that used the recycled products would find it easier to achieve their recycling targets and to establish their green credentials, he added.
“Our aim is to fill the gap for quality recycled building materials, made from products whose disposal would otherwise go to landfill.”
