Clapham Junction squad catch 60 litterbugs in two hours
14 August 2009
A ‘CATCH the litterbugs’ operation outside Clapham Junction station netted 60 offenders in the space of just two hours. They face a £55 fine if they are caught again.
Wandsworth Council’s anti-litter squad joined forces with Wandsworth police to catch people who have turned station entrances into “litter hotspots”.
Those seen dropping rubbish – including cigarette butts and chewing gum – on the pavement were given a warning, but if they are caught again they will be fined £55 on the spot.
If they fail to pay within 10 days, the fine increases to £80. If that remains unpaid after 28 days, they face being summonsed to court, where they could be fined up to £2,500.
Council environment spokeswoman Cllr Sarah McDermott said: “It is really quite staggering that, in just a couple of hours, the council's street-care team found 60 people who brazenly dropped litter on the pavements outside the station.
“The simple message is that people need to put their rubbish in litter bins.
"There are plenty of bins in town centres and near train stations so there is no excuse for dropping litter.”
