Cambridgeshire railway recycling plant gets the green light
21 September 2009
CAMBRIDGESHIRE County Council has approved a new railway recycling plant for the Whitemoor Yard depot.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve the £23 million plan. The Network Rail recycling centre is to create 25 jobs in the March area.
At the plant, situated on a 60-acre site, railway materials will be cleaned and processed for recycling and re-use. It is estimated that more than 50,000 tonnes of waste railway material will be diverted from landfill each year.
Railway materials to be recycled or re-used include steel railway lines and fittings, and both concrete and timber sleepers.
The railway recycling centre is the second phase of development at the Whitemoor Yard depot.
The plant, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2010, will enhance Network Rail’s efforts to make the railway system more ‘green’.
Network Rail says it is also committed to continuing promoting environmental initiatives in the region.
To relocate crested newts that inhabit the site of the recycling plant, a drainage pond is to be created. The pond is expected to ease flooding in the local area as well.
