Addressing fly-tipping – An Environment Agency campaign.

In order to fight against the unauthorised waste dumping problems faced by nearly 94% landowners, the Environment agency has come up with a campaign against fly-tipping. In an attempt to learn about the actual effect and level of the waste being dumped, a pilot scheme is included as a part of the campaign.

Gerald Lee, an official from the Environment Agency's Landowner Partnership, addressed that the campaign was aimed at identifying, documenting and reducing the incidents of illegal waste dumping with a centralised system online over a specified time span. He also added that this information can act as guiding tools to help the British landowners to cope up with the issue.

The first stage is currently in progress in the North western and Midlands region. The initial stage is in partnership with 8 major British landowners and they will be recording incidents till April next year.

Another official from the agency stated that though there is a huge issue of waste being dumped on privately owned land the actual figures are yet to come out and this makes the resolution part all the more difficult. At the same time she informed that the costs of clearing a waste dumped land is more than 800 pounds, which is very expensive as well. Most cases go unreported as there is no reward for reporting such cases. Moreover, as per the present regulations landowners have to bear the cost of waste clearance.
