Recycling Articles : The New Rubbish Charge SchemeBack To Recycling Articles Index Without a doubt something clearly needs to done when it comes to tackling the problem of the large amount of rubbish that we are continually dumping into landfills each and every year. Every year the amount rises and if we carry on as we have done for the last five or so years then landfill space is going to run out.The landfill is a huge hole where your rubbish ends up and is then left to rot. However despite all the modern technology it can still take many years for this rotting to occur and we simply have too much rubbish to replace it before its decomposed enough. The local council and governments answer to this has been to give us a normal wheelie bin, a green wheelie bin for compost and a box for bottles and cans and a bag for paper materials. This they hope will encourage people to sort through their rubbish, divide it and recycle wherever possible, thus cutting down on the amount of rubbish that heads for the landfill. In addition changes have been made to the collection period of our rubbish and now instead of this happening on a weekly basis it is taken fortnightly in some parts of the UK. To make sure that we get the hang of this and to encourage people to separate their rubbish into the different bins several measures are going to be put into place. One of the ideas is the pay as you throw scheme, which means literally that you have to pay for the amount of rubbish which isnt recyclable that you throw away. It is thought people will be charged on an individual basis for every kilo that they throw away, which means that the single person will get off lighter than the family of say four or five. Along with this if you overfill your bin when it is due for collection or if you put out other bags along with your wheelie bin, then these too can incur a fine, as can putting your bin out on the wrong day or forgetting to put it out altogether. One of the ways by which it is thought that the local council will determine how much rubbish you throw away is the fitting of an electronic tagging device into the wheelie bin lid. This small, less than the size of a penny micro chip, will be able to relay how much is coming out of your bin when it is tipped into the dustbin lorry and what the rubbish consists of, therefore leading to determining how much you have to pay.
