Recycling Articles : Fortnightly Rubbish Collection Pros & Cons

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

With the introduction of the fortnightly rubbish collection in almost all areas of the country it will take a while for us to get used to sorting our rubbish and putting it into the correct bins. As with any new system when it is first put into place there will be some problems, however these usually sort themselves out in time and given chance providing we all work with the system not against it.

However there are those that are set against the change in collections, but what are the pros and cons of the fortnightly rubbish collection?

The biggest pro of course for the introduction of this new scheme is that it will lead to less rubbish going into the landfills around the country.

Currently the majority of the vast amount of rubbish that we throw away is taken to landfills, however the amount of rubbish is forever on the increase year after year which means that if carry on as we were doing then eventually there will simply be no space in the landfills.

This means that with the introduction of the fortnightly collection and the collection of the recyclable bin on alternative weeks, this is encouraging more and more people around the country to recycle and take care of what they throw away. Which is excellent for the environment, and makes us aware that we should reuse resources, instead of relying on new ones?

Of course there is the downside to the fortnightly rubbish collection, the biggest problem is that some people and in particular those with big families are finding that even if they recycle their bins are overflowing with the weekly collection.

This means that they are filling bags along with their bins and of course as they have to wait for the collection rubbish is left lying around, this has led of course to complaints about the smell and this will only get worse as the summer approaches. Another problem with rubbish lying around is that it encourages rodents such as mice and rats along with flies and maggots of course.

The fortnightly collection will also see in the future homeowners receiving fines and penalties for having excessive amounts of rubbish, for putting the wrong bin out on the wrong day and will have their rubbish use monitored.

It is thought that currently there have been around 400,000 micro chips fitted into the lids of wheelie bins as a way to monitor the amount of rubbish per household and what is in the bin. In the future this amount of rubbish could be charged per kilo for the rubbish that is not recyclable. If this is the case then some families could expect to pay around £25 per month to have their rubbish taken away.

Regardless of the pros and cons of the fortnightly collection it seems that it is here to stay and there are many other changes in the pipeline.
