    Recycling Articles : Fly Tipping

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

With the introduction of fortnightly rubbish collections and fines thought to be in the pipeline for those who overload their wheelie bins continually, it is thought that more and more people might be encouraged to start fly tipping. Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish and can consist of dumping a small bin bag of rubbish to a full truckload of rubbish on waste ground, lay bays, private land or by the road side.

When it comes to fly tipping a wide variety of waste is dumped, this can be anything from hedge or grass cuttings, waste from construction or demolition to large items such as furniture and electrical equipment like fridges, cookers and washers.

Fly tipping is already a huge problem that costs the tax payer and landowners somewhere between £100 to £150 million to look into and to remove, with the introduction of tighter rules it could end up costing twice as much as this in the very near future.

Not only does the cost and manpower have to be taken into account there are also many other reasons why fly tipping should be stamped out. The first of course is the effect it has on the landscape, environment and wildlife, each year hundreds of animals are hurt, severely wounded and even killed due to illegal waste being dumped.

The beauty of the countryside is spoiled as it is turned into nothing more than a dumpsite and along with this some of the matter dumped illegally, gives off toxic fumes which pollute the air and rivers.

Illegal fly tipping is done in large quantities and these people dump huge amounts undercutting the legitimate businesses along with giving the legitimate businesses a bad name. Areas that are well known for fly tipping and in which fly tipping is a regular thing sees a huge decrease in house prices and businesses suffer as people avoid the area.

While the majority of the time it is the local authorities that tackle fly tipping and the problems associated with it such as removal, the public can also work alongside them. The local authorities have set up sting operations when the area has been well noted as being used for fly tipping on a regular basis.

Not only by the homeowner but also by those who fly tip as a business, dumping truck fulls of waste. There are also units set up to deal with chemical waste which is sometimes dumped illegally and environmental crime is thought to cost somewhere in the region of around £12m every single year.

You can do your bit however by giving it some thought the next time you might be tempted to just dump your hedge cuttings on waste land, because if you are caught fly tipping it could lead to a huge fine.
