    Recycling Articles : Recycling Water

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

Since the beginning of the world, water has been recycled again and again and again more times than most people can count. A million people may have drank your glass of water before you and it may still be as pure as it was in the beginning. However, the old waterways, the ways water recycles and re-purifies itself, are becoming corrupted and polluted. The natural way in which water has recycled itself from age to age is beginning to spoil.

Industrial accidents and poor methods of waste disposal are leading much of the world’s water to become polluted, making it more difficult to recycle. Taking care of our water systems is important for the survival of every creature on earth and there are a few simple things we can do to help preserve our waterways and keep water recycling.

Firstly, conserving water is the most important step to take for every individual. It is true that water is naturally recycling itself all over the world, but at the moment, mankind is using water quicker than nature recycles it. Large scale industrial use (for example, to cool the reactor in a Nuclear power plant) means that we are using too much water, too fast.

Conserving water eases the burden on wastewater treatment plants and allows more water to exist for fish and animals without being guzzled away by us. Using water wisely also saves the energy that the water supplier would have used to treat it and send it to you. Not only that, but water conservation can save you money - a little bit of personal motivation to save the environment.

The first step is to fix leaking taps and water pipes. After that then water wastage is almost entirely due to habits that we develop due to taking our water supply for granted. Turn off the taps between rinsing plates or whilst you are brushing your teeth. Always set your dishwasher to economy settings and make sure that it’s energy efficient. If the economy settings doesn’t properly clean the dishes then just soak them in one sink of hot water before washing them and you can be confident that you are saving water and helping the environment.

Alternatively, if you’re a die-hard environmentalist then you could try out rain harvesting. This involves using water that has come from the rain and has been recycled and purified in your own back garden. What ever you do, make sure that you study the benefits of it. Look for yourself at the difference that you could make to the environment and then do it!
