Probate Offices

When someone dies, a close relative or friend has to deal with their estate by distributing what is left to the people who are entitled and paying any outstanding debts. Probate is the term for the legal authority, given to at least one and up to four individuals to take charge of the estate.

In the UK, Probate comes in the form of a "grant of representation", a legal document issued by the Probate Registry giving proof of your authority to control the estate of the deceased.

If you are the executor of the will or, if there was no valid will, the next of kin, then you may need to obtain a grant of representation in order to represent the estate of the deceased and sell assets, distribute finances and pay outstanding debts.
