Your wheelie bin is a magnet for flies, maggots and other vermin, especially in the summer months as the ordour emanating from your bins increases due to the heat. However, you can minimize ordours and keep you bins smell and vermin free by following these simple tips:

* Keep your wheelie bin lid shut at all times to prevent ordours from being released and flies and other vermin from accessing your rubbish. Many people mistakingly leave their bin lids open in the hope that the wind and air will somehow make the ordours dissipate over time

* Try to recycle as much as you can to reduce the load on your bins

* Wrap all food waste in a secure way before putting it into your bin. Don’t put loose food scraps directly into the bin as decaying food attracts flies who will lay their eggs in your bin resulting in maggots

* Even wrapping food scraps securely can still produce ordours as the food decays, to minmiise this effect squeeze all air out of the bag or wrapper first as trapped air can heat up

* Double wrap all food scraps that leave strong ordours when decaying, such as meat

* Recycle all cans and bottles as empty cans and bottles attract flies

* Avoid using your wheelie bin for green garden waste as this too attracts flies

* Don’t overfill your bin to the point you’re unable to close the lid properly. Compact your rubbish if you have a lot of it by flattening anything that can be flattened

* Use extra large liners to line your bin and fasten them to keep the inside of your bin clean, remember to regularly change the liner

* Always wash your bin on a regular basis using warm water and disinfectant.
