Recycling Articles : How Does Our Rubbish Collection Compare To Other Countries?

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

With the majority of local councils now collecting rubbish on a fortnightly basis and with many not being happy about this and indeed while it does seem to encourage more of us to recycle it also causes problems, the questions we should ask is how does our rubbish collection compare to other countries?

Recycling has improved by around 30% when compared to the old way of collecting rubbish every week, but the downside to the fortnightly collection has been more maggots, flies, the bad smells and more rats and rodents hanging around the rubbish left for the two week period.

So how do other nations and cities compare to ours?

Those who live in central Spain in the city have their rubbish taken away at least 6 days per week. All apartment buildings have a communal wheelie bin which is put out overnight and emptied very early the next morning, residents are also provided with bins on the street by which to recycle such items as paper, glass and bottles and this system seems to work particularly well.

If you live in Belgium then you can be sure that your rubbish is collected once a week, this is the rubbish which is not recyclable. Households are given other bins in which they can sort through their rubbish and recycle it, these bins are collected once a week also but in the smaller towns this can be fortnightly.

The rubbish collection service is not only for household waste but also includes collection of such items as furniture, refrigerators and such on a regular basis. If you are lucky enough to live in Paris then your rubbish will be collected on a daily basis, this is generally either very late at night or very early in the morning.

In addition to this all residents are asked to recycle and are given the equipment to do so. The same applies for Rome; there they collect the rubbish every single day, even Sundays with the only days missing being religious days. However Rome doesn’t rely heavily on recycling and is one of the countries which are behind in that respect.

If you live in Germany then you are very self conscious when it comes to recycling, Germany has an excellent rate and one of the most complex systems when it comes to disposing of their rubbish. While the normal bins are emptied on a weekly basis so are the other bins containing bottles, glass, paper and compost materials, although the bins are emptied on different days according to what is in them.

Old furniture and appliances are taken away free of charge on a regular basis and these are broken down if they are made of wood or such, by those who take them away, all without any cost to the resident.

When all this is taken into account you can see that it seems we are getting a raw deal with our government and local councils when it comes to our rubbish collection and the means they intend to put on us to force us to become more aware when it comes to recycling.
