Recycling Articles : Pay As You Throw Could Soon Become A Reality

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

With the ever increasing war between home owners, the amount of rubbish they throw away and the council collecting it, it seems that the government may be soon introducing a new law which could see many households having to pay as they throw.

This scheme would be very similar to the many pay as you go schemes which are in force with such things as mobile phones. Quite simply this could be brought into force for those households which are seen as having a high quantity of rubbish on a regular basis.

The whole idea of the scheme is that it will encourage residents to be more aware of recycling and to separate their rubbish into different containers rather than just throw everything into their rubbish bin.

The majority of households have seen the introduction of the blue bin and green recycle bin in which to sort through their rubbish and put newspapers, glass, plastics and tins into the correct containers. The pay as you throw scheme is thought to be a way of getting more people to use them and to recycle.

It is thought that if the scheme goes ahead then it could mean that households will have as many as five different containers into which they will have to sort their rubbish. It is also thought that local councils might be given more power when it comes to imposing fines on those who don’t comply with the recycling rules and who continue to put everything into their “normal” wheelie bin.

However along with the fines there is also good news as it is thought that if the scheme gets the go ahead then along with fining those who don’t comply with the new ruling, rewards will also be given out for those households that achieve the most recycling.

The pay as you throw ruling will be put in place as the government and councils continues their measures on reducing the amount of rubbish that is put into landfills. Already some council have reduced the rubbish collections from weekly to fortnightly with some areas having alternative weeks for what are known as the green bins, the recycling bins.

Those who oppose this new scheme and there are many retaliate by saying this will only encourage people to fly-tip, which is the illegal dumping of waste on land. Another factor against the fortnightly collection is sanitary reasons; in areas that have already started the fortnightly collections rubbish has been seen piled in the street awaiting collection which has seen an increase in the rat population.

So the word is to get into the habit of recycling in order to make sure that you aren’t one of the first to start paying as you throw.
