Recycling Articles : Rubbish & Recycling FAQs

    Back To Recycling Articles Index

    What does recycling mean?

Recycling simply means reusing your rubbish, you go through your rubbish items and separate them into different containers, and you can also compost your own rubbish and use this is your garden. If you recycle such things a plastic bottles and newspapers then the rubbish company will take these and process them and turn them into something new.

What items can be recycled in the home?

Items such as steel and aluminium cans, newspapers, telephone and yellow page books, plastic and glass bottles, clothing, large appliances and food waste can all be recycled or composted and used again.

    Why doesn’t everyone recycle?

Some people don’t recycle simply because they don’t use enough materials that are recyclable, others forget or simply don’t know what they can and cannot recycle and some just plain can’t be bothered to sort through their rubbish and recycle.

Why is it so important to recycle?

The biggest problem due to people not recycling is that the amount of rubbish we are producing is growing each and every single year. The biggest place where the rubbish goes is the landfill, here the rubbish breaks down and then more rubbish is put in its place. However even with the advancements in technology it can take a long time for the rubbish matter to break down, the amount of rubbish we are producing every year is greater than it breaks down which means we will run out of landfill space if we continue as we are doing.

What does composting mean is it the same as recycling?

Composting simply means taking such things as grass cuttings, kitchen scraps and woody material and breaking it down into a soil like substance which you can then use on your own garden to put back goodness into the soil which helps your plants and flowers to grow better.

How can I help to make the environment better, is recycling the only option?

Along with recycling all the household waste that you can which is an excellent way to help the environment there is also a lot of other small things you can change around your home to make the environment a better place. Some of these include changing your light bulbs from the ordinary type to energy saving bulbs. These give you hours more light while cutting on the power needed and also means that you have to change them less frequently which save you money and waste.

Whenever you leave a room then make sure that you turn off all the electrical equipment that you don’t need to be on. For example turn off the TV instead of just putting it into standby. Turn off all the lights if you don’t intend going straight back into the room and make it a point to go checking for these until you get into the habit.

Having your loft and cavity walls insulated can save you pounds over the course of the year; it means you can turn the heating down a little while still keeping warm. If you can then have double glazing windows installed, this also keeps the heat in and if not then there are kits that you can buy at the DIY stores which include a see through wrap you can blow dry over your inside window frames.
